Flat out useful
Punctures always seem to strike at the most irksome times and for decades carmakers have sought various solutions to the problem. Now, a genuinely punctureproof car tyre has finally appeared, through a prototype airless tyre developed by Michelin and General Motors. This self-supporting tyre does not need to be inflated but is said to produce the ride and handling of a standard pneumatic tyre. The puncture-proof tyre is being tested on a fleet of Chevrolet Bolt electric cars and if the trials go well, it could be commercially available by 2024.
